<Holding the courts to account
We created the identity for a developing initiative to hold courts to account when judging and sentencing women. An update on the concept of the judge’s scales, our identity aims to be striking and recognisable when worn by volunteers, while also being suitable for use on more official briefings for diverse stakeholders.
Based on similar programmes which have been working successfully across the US, the intervention aims to ensure courts follow the correct sentencing guidelines. Trained volunteers attend public courts as observers and record judgements and sentencing decisions. This generates useful insights on the decision-making processes that lead to women’s imprisonment which can be used to push for change, and more importantly for the women being sentenced, it has been found in the US that as the volunteers began to become recognised, their presence would make judges more accountable, and fairer.
